On directing the International Space Station with undiagnosed ADHD.
It’s astounding when we Wise Squirrels pause and reflect on the personal and professional successes we have experienced, all while not knowing we have ADHD. Without this self-knowledge we adapted and developed coping skills to help us with our challenges, while assuming everyone else probably had them too.

A Storied Career in Space Exploration
Dr. Bob's journey in the field of space exploration is nothing short of remarkable. With a passion for the cosmos from an early age, he dreamt of becoming an astronaut. Although his path eventually led him in a different direction, it didn't diminish his enthusiasm for unraveling the mysteries beyond our planet.
Starting his career at NASA, Dr. Bob contributed significantly to various projects, showcasing his expertise and dedication. His pinnacle achievement came when he assumed the role of director of the International Space Station, overseeing the complex operations of this marvel of human ingenuity.
A Late Diagnosis of ADHD
Despite his illustrious career, Dr. Bob faced a personal challenge that eluded diagnosis for decades. At the age of 60, he received the unexpected news – he had ADHD. The revelation came as both a surprise and a form of validation, explaining the unique challenges he had encountered throughout his life.
This late-in-life diagnosis prompted self-reflection and a search for strategies to navigate life with ADHD. Dr. Bob's experience sheds light on the often-underestimated prevalence of neurodivergent conditions in high-achieving professionals, demonstrating that success and challenges can coexist.
The Intersection of ADHD and Space Exploration
In our candid conversation, Dr. Bob discussed the intersection of ADHD and his work in space exploration. He reflects on how undiagnosed ADHD affected his interactions, decision-making, and overall experience. The challenges of verifying space missions and the necessity of effective communication in the collaboration of multiple companies in space exploration are just a few of the complex issues he navigated.
The Role of Coaching in Self-Discovery
Dr. Bob's post-diagnosis journey included working with an ADHD coach, Chris Ann Nixon, who helped him unravel the mysteries of his own mind. The coaching sessions provided valuable insights into his thought processes and behaviors, leading to a deeper understanding of himself. Discoveries like the significance of fidgeting and finding ways to channel nervous energy opened new avenues for self-improvement.
Dr. Bob's journey, from directing the ISS to receiving a late ADHD diagnosis, is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His story reminds us that success is not immune to personal challenges, and self-awareness can be a catalyst for positive change.
As Dr. Bob continues to contribute to the space exploration field, his experience serves as an inspiration to fellow Wise Squirrels.
