What do employees with ADHD need?
In pursuit of a productive workforce, employers must be attuned to the challenges their employees face, including those related to mental health. ADHD often lacks the support it deserves within employee benefits packages.
Caitlin Stamatis, Director of Medical and Scientific Affairs at the digital medicine platform Akili, emphasizes that ADHD is more than just a struggle to focus. It encompasses difficulties in managing time, juggling tasks, and facing executive function challenges.
A recent survey conducted by Akili among 500 employees with ADHD and 500 managers revealed that 97% of employees believe they could accomplish more at work if they could better manage their ADHD symptoms. While 94% are already utilizing treatment or other methods to address their ADHD, a staggering 78% express a desire for more support to reach their full potential in the workplace.
Despite the effectiveness of conventional treatments, which have remained largely unchanged for over half a century, challenges persist, with medication being a leading option for ADHD patients. Unfortunately, medication can come with various side effects, and a recent shortage issue has impacted 88% of respondents in the Akili survey.
An overwhelming 95% of employees with ADHD feel limited by the available treatment options. Kalab Frisby, an associate licensed clinical therapist, shares his experience and reliance on Akili's EndeavorOTC program, an app designed to enhance focus, increase tolerance for frustration, and strengthen memory through gamified tasks. For Frisby, managing tasks, especially documentation, has been a persistent challenge, and the lack of support from his previous employer, both in terms of accommodations and resources, exacerbated the situation.
The survey also unveiled that 87% of employees believe ADHD has contributed to negative career events, such as negative performance evaluations, missed promotions, or the reduction of core responsibilities. Such experiences led Frisby to seek a more accommodating workplace, where he can comfortably use EndeavorOTC when necessary.
How to support Wise Squirrels at work
Employers are urged to recognize the prevalence of ADHD within their workforce and to foster a supportive culture for mental health disclosure. Providing access to behavioral treatments and digital therapeutics can make a significant difference. Also, hiring guest speakers to help educate teams with content like The Root Down is essential.
Prominent individuals in leadership positions speaking out can also help reduce the stigma surrounding ADHD and encourage employees to seek the support they need to perform at their best. Addressing the needs of Wise Squirrels at work is not only a moral imperative but also a practical step toward creating a more productive and supportive work environment.
