Three big points to consider for late-diagnosed ADHD.

We’re looking back at our recent interview with Dr. Russell Ramsay this week.

Dr. Ramsay, a board-certified in Behavioral and Cognitive Psychology, has written five books about adult ADHD, including Rethinking Adult ADHD and The Adult ADHD Tool Kit. He is a Ph.D., ABPP, a retired professor from the University of Pennsylvania, where he co-founded the Adult ADHD Treatment and Research Program and was a professor of clinical psychology.

Three big points Wise Squirrels should consider.

Here are three big takeaways from Dr. Ramsay’s interview on the ADHD Wise Squirrels Podcast.

1. Understanding and Managing ADHD: Dr. Ramsay emphasizes the importance of understanding ADHD as a neurobiological condition that impacts executive functioning and self-regulation. He highlights that ADHD is not a character flaw or a matter of intelligence, but rather a condition that can be managed effectively with the right strategies and treatment.

2. Self-Knowledge and Self-Compassion: Dr. Ramsay encourages individuals with ADHD to monitor their thoughts and feelings, recognizing the positive aspects even in challenging situations. He advises that Wise Squirrels should adopt a more behavioral approach to self-improvement, focusing on actions rather than character traits, and practice self-compassion, understanding that slip-ups are part of the process.

3. Finding Support and Community: Dr. Ramsay highlights the significance of connecting with others who understand ADHD and can provide support and understanding. He mentions organizations like CHADD and ADDA as valuable resources for individuals with ADHD to find community and access relevant information.
