We’re on the News about ADHD Awareness Month!
In recognition of ADHD Awareness Month, Nikki Hauser and her team at News Channel 5 spotlighted the challenges and experiences of adults living with ADHD, particularly those diagnosed later in life. Our Chief Wise Squirrel, Dave Delaney, shared his journey of discovering his ADHD at 50. For Delaney, the late diagnosis brought long-awaited clarity, helping him understand past behaviors that had puzzled him for years.
ADHD, often misunderstood and mischaracterized as only a childhood disorder, impacts many adults as well. According to the CDC, around 4% of adults in the U.S. have ADHD, and Delaney’s story exemplifies how this condition can go undiagnosed for decades. Through his podcast, ADHD Wise Squirrels, Delaney connects with others facing similar challenges, offering a sense of community and understanding. He emphasizes that while ADHD brings its struggles, it is also manageable and, in many cases, can be a strength to celebrate.
Delaney notes that ADHD can fuel creativity and entrepreneurial spirit—traits that are often misunderstood as disruptive. As diagnoses rise and awareness grows, Delaney hopes to help others embrace their ADHD and find ways to thrive.
For those curious about ADHD, Delaney offers an online self-assessment tool, though he stresses the importance of seeking a formal diagnosis from a healthcare professional. His ongoing mission during ADHD Awareness Month is to encourage individuals to better understand the disorder, recognize its strengths, and find community support.
Thanks for the excellent reporting, Nikki!
